Summer: Anyway You Like It – Page 4

Summer vacation – those three months between the school year’s end and beginning – has always offered the free time students enjoy so much. Warm temperatures and a break from homework and early morning hours make summer a favorite season.

Northside students found many ways to use their free time. Some chose to return to classes and learned to drive in Driver’s Ed. or picked up credits in U. S. History or Government. Several students gathered new ideas for THE NORTHSIDE NEWS by attending Ball State’s Journalism Workshop. Band members began working in early July preparing for contests, including the State Fair. Six seniors attended Hoosier Girls’ and Boys’ State to learn more about our American form of government.

Travel was also a popular activity. German students Ann Daly, Cathy Nelson, Caroline Rychak, Dave Sjuman, Julie Sickles, Marisa Simes, and Gretchen Snyder spent a month of study in Bavaria, in West Germany. Senior Linda Chesnut toured Italy after being chosen for the Honors Abroad program for third year Latin students. Mexico was home for senior Jill Jump, a participant in the Indiana University Honors Program. Stan Buck visited eleven European countries while traveling with the "Sound of Hope" singing group.

Senior Shelly Gouveia became "Miss Sesquicentennial" during the Historical Society Festival. She also won the talent title for the pageant.

Summer jobs were a popular way to earn some much needed cash by working in one of the many stores, restaurants, or offices in the Muncie area.

Most students found summer a great time to swim, play tennis, sail, or simply relax before heading back to the big brick building on Bethel Avenue.
